This is a natural objection to Shiner’s claim, but it rests on a misunderstanding. He does not say there is nothing in common between artists or artworks or arts criticism or the experience of art products in the west before and after the 18th century, or between the modern west and non-western cultures. He does not imply that artisans in the old system could not express themselves, or create profound visions of life and the world. That would not be a defensible position. Rather Shiner claims that art was divided in the 18th century west.
